Winter Drinks:

As temperatures drop across SA, there's no better way to stay warm than with a nourishing hot drink. From magic mushroom immunity mylk to spiced turmeric lattes, these winter drink recipes combine wholesome ingredients with genuine comfort.

Heater fighting load-shedding, kids sniffling, and your fourth coffee of the day making you jittery instead of warm? Winter in South Africa runs on hot drinks — so they may as well be working for your immune system instead of just your cold hands.

Here's our honest guide to the winter drinks worth making, with the recipes we actually use and what each one genuinely does.

What we'd suggest

  • Swap one coffee a day for matcha (calm focus, no jitters) or Bambu (zero caffeine, so it works at bedtime too).
  • At the first scratchy throat: ginger tea with lemon and raw honey, or echinacea tea — started early, they earn their keep.
  • Upgrade the hot chocolate: raw cacao plus a medicinal mushroom blend turns a treat into immune support the kids will still drink.
  • Go easy on the sugar — a little honey is fine, but heaps of sugar quietly suppresses the immune system you're trying to help.

Hot chocolate, the healthy way

Raw cacao is rich in antioxidants and magnesium — the trick is skipping the sugary instant powder. Two of our favourite recipes:

Magic Mushroom Immunity Mylk (1 serving, quick)

Method: blend until smooth and thick, then heat on the stove until frothy (or pour over ice if the sun's out).

Immunity Chocolate Elixir (1–2 servings, 5 minutes)

  • 2 tsp raw cacao powder + 1 tsp immunity mushroom blend
  • 1 heaped tsp nut butter, 1 tsp vanilla extract, ¼ tsp Maca Xpresso (optional)
  • 1 medjool date (or maple syrup), 1 cup milk of choice, hot water, pinch of salt

Method: blend everything, serve hot. Shop our cacao range.

Matcha: focus without the jitters

Finely ground young green tea leaves — essentially a concentrate of antioxidants, minerals and L-theanine, the calming amino acid that supports serotonin and dopamine. The result is alert focus with a calm body: everything the third coffee promises and doesn't deliver.

Matcha Mint Latté

Mix 1½ tsp matcha powder with a little hot water in a mug. Warm and froth your milk, add just half a drop of mint essential oil (tip it carefully off a teaspoon — it's strong), add 1½ tbsp honey, and combine. Shop matcha here.

Bambu: the coffee alternative that lets you sleep

Created by Alfred Vogel over 50 years ago from organic chicory, Turkish figs, malted barley, wheat and Greek acorns — Bambu is completely caffeine-free, so no palpitations and no clock-watching about when you drink it. Bonus: it's high in potassium, and chicory supports digestion. Make it like instant coffee, or with hot milk for the full comfort effect. Get Bambu here.

Bone broth: the original winter medicine

Simmered bones and connective tissue deliver minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium), collagen and gelatin for the gut lining — and since most of your immune system lives in the gut, that matters — plus anti-inflammatory amino acids like glycine and glutamine. It soothes a sore throat, thins mucus, and warms you from the inside on a load-shedding evening. Sip a cup in the morning, between meals, or especially when you're under the weather. Need inspiration? Here are ten easy ways to use bone broth — and WhatsApp us to ask about the bone broth we stock.

Warm apple cider vinegar drink

Warm water + apple cider vinegar + raw honey + cinnamon. ACV brings antimicrobial properties and digestive support; apples' pectin feeds good gut bacteria; cinnamon helps steady blood sugar; and the steam soothes a stuffy nose. Add ginger, cloves or lemon to level it up — or try this hot apple cider recipe for the festive version. Shop apple cider vinegar.

Ginger tea: the first-sign responder

Fresh ginger, hot water, lemon, honey. Gingerol — ginger's main bioactive compound — is powerfully anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, clears congestion, settles nausea and supports digestion. This is the one to make the moment someone says "my throat feels funny." Shop ginger products.

Turmeric latte (golden milk)

Milk of choice + turmeric + black pepper (essential — it boosts curcumin absorption dramatically) + cinnamon + a little honey. Curcumin is one of nature's strongest anti-inflammatories, and this is the cosiest way to take it.

Echinacea tea: the cold-shortener

Brewed from the plant's leaves, flowers and roots, echinacea is traditionally used to support immune cell activity, with some research looking at its effect on cold symptoms — best started at the very first sign of a scratchy throat rather than day four. Shop echinacea.

Green tea and chai

Green tea is loaded with catechins — antioxidants that support immune function — with a gentle caffeine lift. Chai is basically an immune formula disguised as a treat: cinnamon and cloves for antioxidants, ginger and black pepper for circulation and digestion, cardamom for the gut. Browse our full tea range — there are over 600 to choose from.

Peppermint tea: the decongestant

Menthol clears blocked noses and opens airways, rosmarinic acid calms inflammation, and it relaxes the digestive tract — useful after winter comfort food. It also eases tension headaches. Shop peppermint.

Three rules for maximum benefit

  • Hydration first: warm drinks count towards your fluids — and winter dehydration is real.
  • Fresh beats stale: fresh ginger, real spices and quality honey carry the actual benefits.
  • Watch the sugar: a teaspoon of honey is support; half a cup of sugar is sabotage.
