Zinc Supplements in South Africa: Which Form, How Much, and When to Stop

Picolinate, glycinate, citrate, orotate, a lozenge or a tablet — the zinc shelf is confusing. Here is how to read it in two minutes: the one number that matters, the forms, the ceiling nobody mentions, and the medicines zinc does not mix with.

"Zinc supplement" is a search our site shows up for on Google, and it is easy to see why people ask. Walk up to the zinc shelf at any of our three counters and you will find tablets, capsules, lozenges and liquids, in five or six different forms, at prices from under R100 to over R600. Most of that variety is real. Some of it is noise. Here is how to read the shelf in two minutes.

First, what zinc does

Zinc is an essential trace mineral: your body cannot make it and does not store much of it, so it has to come from food or a supplement every day. It contributes to normal immune function and to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails. Red meat, shellfish, poultry, beans, nuts and whole grains all carry it, which is why many people who eat a varied diet never need a supplement at all.

That is the honest starting point: a zinc supplement is for filling a gap, not for topping up a tank that is already full.

The one number that matters

Turn the bottle round and look for elemental zinc per dose, in milligrams. That is how much zinc you are actually getting, as opposed to the weight of the zinc compound.

Two of the bottles we stock put that number where you can see it: Metagenics Zinc Glycinate gives 30 mg of zinc per tablet, and Solgar Zinc Picolinate gives 22 mg per tablet. Others print it only on the back panel, and some make you do the arithmetic across a two- or three-tablet serving. If you cannot find the number, ask us. We will read the label with you.

The forms, plainly

  • Picolinate — zinc bound to picolinic acid. Makers describe it as highly absorbable. Zinplex and Solgar both use it.
  • Glycinate — zinc bound to the amino acid glycine, a chelated form. Metagenics describes it as well absorbed and gentle on digestion, which is why some people who get nausea from zinc try it first.
  • Citrate and gluconate — common in lozenges, including Solgar's Flavo-Zinc.
  • Orotate — the form in Fortifood's Zinc Orotate.

The form matters less than people think and the dose matters more. A well-absorbed form at the wrong dose is still the wrong dose.

The ceiling nobody mentions

The US National Institutes of Health sets the recommended daily intake at 8 mg for adult women and 11 mg for adult men, and the upper limit at 40 mg a day for adults, from all sources.

Read that last part again: from all sources. A 30 mg zinc tablet plus a multivitamin with 15 mg of zinc plus a zinc lozenge puts you over the limit before you have counted a single meal. Taken above that limit for long stretches, zinc can lower your copper levels. So:

1. Add up every product you take that lists zinc.

2. Keep the total at or under 40 mg unless a doctor has told you otherwise.

3. Treat a higher dose as short-term, with a stop date you choose before you start.

Tablet, capsule or lozenge?

Tablets and capsules are the everyday choice. Lozenges dissolve slowly in the mouth and are a seasonal favourite; they still count towards your daily total, so count every one. Liquid zinc exists too and is useful for people who struggle with tablets.

How to take it

Take it with food if it makes you queasy on an empty stomach, which zinc does for some people. Follow the directions on your label: Zinplex, for example, directs three tablets a day for adults, and Metagenics and Solgar direct one.

When to ask first

  • If you take prescribed medicine. Zinc can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (quinolones and tetracyclines) and of penicillamine. Your pharmacist can tell you how far apart to take them.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or buying for a child. Ask a consultant or your doctor before you choose a dose.
  • If you have been taking a high dose for months. Talk to your doctor about your copper.

Frequently asked questions

Which form of zinc is best?

The forms you will see on our shelf are picolinate, glycinate, citrate, gluconate and orotate. Picolinate and glycinate are the ones makers describe as highly absorbable, and some people whose stomach objects to zinc choose glycinate. More important than the form is the elemental zinc per dose, which is the number that tells you how much zinc you are actually taking.

How much zinc do adults need a day?

The US National Institutes of Health gives a recommended intake of 8 mg a day for adult women and 11 mg for adult men, and an upper limit of 40 mg a day from all sources for adults. That upper limit includes the zinc in your multivitamin and any other product you take, so add them up.

Can I take zinc every day long term?

At or under your daily need, many people do. Above the 40 mg upper limit for long periods, zinc can lower your copper levels, which is why high-dose zinc is a short-term decision rather than a habit. If you want to stay on a higher dose, ask a consultant or your doctor first.

Should I take zinc with food?

Zinc on an empty stomach can cause nausea in some people. If it does, take it with a meal. Follow the directions on your label.

Does zinc interact with medicines?

Yes. Zinc can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (quinolones and tetracyclines) and of penicillamine, and some diuretics change how much zinc you lose. If you take any prescribed medicine, ask your pharmacist how far apart to take them.
