How to Take Psyllium Husk (Without the Glass of Cement)
Psyllium husk is one of the simplest things on our shelf, and one of the easiest to take badly. Powder or capsules, how much water, when in the day, how to start, and who should ask first — in two minutes.
Psyllium husk is one of the cheapest things on our shelf and one of the most useful. It is also one of the easiest to take badly. The classic mistake happens in the kitchen: a spoon of powder into a glass, a pause to answer a message, and by the time you come back the glass has set into something you have to eat with a spoon. Here is how to avoid that, and everything else worth knowing, in two minutes.

What psyllium husk is
Psyllium husk comes from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant. It is a source of soluble fibre, and fibre supports normal, regular bowel movements. It is naturally gluten free, which is why the same tub also turns up in gluten-free baking.
On our shelf it comes in two shapes: powder (Nature's Choice 150g and 400g, Health Connection 150g) and capsules (Willow, 100 capsules; Solgar, 500 mg in 200 capsules). It is the same husk either way.
Why it thickens
Soluble fibre soaks up water and turns into a gel. That is the whole point of it, and it is also why the glass sets if you leave it standing. So the rule is simple:
1. Stir the dose on your pack into a full glass of water.
2. Drink it straight away, while it is still liquid.
3. Drink another full glass of water after it.
Health Connection's pack puts it plainly: always take it with at least one full glass of water. Taking it with too little fluid is the one real mistake.
Powder or capsules?
| Powder | Capsules | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per dose | Lower | Higher |
| The thickening glass | You have to be quick | Not a problem |
| Water | Still a full glass, then another | Still a full glass, then another |
| Also useful for | Gluten-free baking | Travel, work, the office drawer |
If the texture has put you off before, capsules solve it. If you bake gluten-free, the powder earns its place twice.
Start low
Fibre that your gut is not used to can cause wind and bloating for the first week or two. Start with less than the full dose on the pack, drink plenty of water through the day, and build up over a week or two. That is the dull advice that makes the difference between keeping it up and giving up.
When in the day
Whenever you will remember the water. Breakfast is easy for most people. The one time to avoid is just before lying down for the night: take it earlier, when you are upright and drinking.
Who should ask first
- If you take prescribed medicine. Fibre can change how some medicines are absorbed. Take other medicines a couple of hours apart from psyllium, and ask your pharmacist about yours.
- If you have difficulty swallowing, or a history of bowel blockage or narrowing, speak to your doctor before taking psyllium.
- If your bowel habits have changed suddenly and you do not know why, see a doctor rather than a shelf.

Frequently asked questions
How do you take psyllium husk powder?
Stir the dose on your pack into a full glass of water and drink it straight away, before it thickens. Then drink another glass of water. Taking psyllium without enough fluid is the mistake to avoid.
Is it better to take psyllium as powder or capsules?
They are the same husk. Powder is cheaper per dose and doubles as a baking ingredient; capsules skip the race against the thickening glass. Either way, take them with plenty of water.
When is the best time of day to take psyllium?
Any time that suits you, as long as it is not just before lying down for the night. Many people take it with breakfast or before a main meal so the water that goes with it is easy to remember.
Can I take psyllium with my medication?
Fibre can change how some medicines are absorbed, so take other medicines a couple of hours apart from psyllium, and ask your pharmacist about the specific medicines you take.
Who should not take psyllium without asking first?
Anyone who has difficulty swallowing, anyone with a history of bowel blockage or narrowing, and anyone whose bowel habits have changed suddenly without explanation should speak to a doctor first.
