The magnesium question we get every week
"Which magnesium should I buy?" is one of the most common questions at the counter, and the honest answer is: it depends what you're after. Magnesium comes in several different forms, and they're not interchangeable — the form matters more than the dose printed on the front of the box.
Glycinate, citrate, or oxide — what's the actual difference?
Magnesium glycinate
Magnesium bound to glycine. It's gentle on the stomach, well absorbed, and the one most people reach for if they want a form they can take daily without discomfort. Many people take it in the evening as part of a wind-down routine, though that's a personal habit rather than a rule.
Magnesium citrate
Also well absorbed, but citrate draws water into the gut, which is why it's the form most associated with supporting regularity. If your main goal is general topping-up rather than digestive support, glycinate is usually the more comfortable daily option.
Magnesium oxide
You'll see this one everywhere because it's cheap and the label can claim a high amount of elemental magnesium per tablet. The catch is that oxide is poorly absorbed, so a lot of what you swallow passes straight through — which is also why it's more likely to cause loose stools than the other forms. It's not a bad choice if cost is the deciding factor, but don't expect it to feel the same as glycinate or citrate.
Magnesium forms at a glance
| Form | Absorption | Usually chosen for | Stomach comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glycinate (bisglycinate) | Well absorbed | Gentle daily topping-up; part of an evening wind-down routine | Gentlest |
| Citrate | Well absorbed | General use with digestive regularity support | Can loosen at higher doses |
| Orotate | Well absorbed | Active adults wanting muscle and exercise support | Generally comfortable |
| Complex / trace-mineral blend | Varies by blend | A broad-spectrum option in one capsule or sachet | Usually comfortable |
| Oxide | Poorly absorbed | Lowest-cost elemental magnesium on the label | Most likely to loosen |

- ECO VALLEY Magnesium 787 - 60 Capsules (R219.94)
- GENOLOGIX BodyMag Magnesium Glycinate + Taurate 1500mg - 120 Veg Capsules (R320.00)
- WILLOW Magnesium Glycinate - 120 Capsules (R361.00)
- BIOMAX® Magnesium Complex Liposomal - 60 Veg Capsules (R317.00)
Where we'd start: the Eco Valley 787 is the best-selling magnesium on our shelves and the easiest on the budget. The Genologix BodyMag pairs glycinate with taurate in a bigger 120-capsule bottle, and the Willow glycinate is the one our counter staff reach for most for evening routines. The Biomax liposomal complex suits people who want a broader-spectrum formula in one capsule.
Timing and stacking
Magnesium is one of those nutrients people accidentally double up on — a capsule in the morning, an effervescent sachet at lunch, and mineralised water all day adds up faster than people expect. Check your total against the label maximums rather than assuming more is always better; too much magnesium at once is the fastest way to end up in the bathroom.
If you're taking other minerals — calcium, zinc, iron — space them out through the day rather than taking everything in one hit. It doesn't need to be complicated: pick one time that fits your routine and stick with it, because consistency matters more than precise timing.
What to watch for
The most common side effect across all forms is a looser stomach, usually a sign to drop the dose or switch forms rather than push through it. If you have kidney disease or are on medication that affects magnesium levels, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding a supplement. Pregnant or breastfeeding? Same advice — ask first.

Frequently asked questions
Which form should I start with?
If you're new to magnesium and just want a comfortable daily option, glycinate is usually the easiest on the stomach. If you also want digestive support, citrate does double duty.
How long before I notice anything?
Give any form two to four weeks of consistent use before judging it. Most people notice evening wind-down and morning muscle ease first — track those rather than expecting an overnight change.
Morning or night?
Either works. Many people prefer the evening because magnesium is part of a wind-down routine for them, but there's no rule that says it must be taken at a specific time — pick what you'll actually stick to.
Can I take more than one magnesium product at once?
You can, but add up the elemental magnesium across everything you're taking — including a multivitamin, if you use one — and stay within the combined label maximum.
Why did the cheaper tablet upset my stomach when the pricier one didn't?
That's usually the form talking, not the price. Oxide is the most likely to cause stomach upset because so much of it isn't absorbed; glycinate is generally the gentlest.
