Common questions
What makes magnesium orotate a superior form of magnesium?+
Magnesium orotate is magnesium bonded in a stable chelate with orotic acid. Unlike other magnesium salts, it does not dissociate into separate ions — the whole complex is absorbed as is and transported to organs where it is utilised, including sites of active pyrimidine metabolism such as the heart muscle. Because of this transport mechanism, lower doses can be effective.
How do I take Fortifood Magnesium Orotate?+
Take three capsules twice per day with meals, preferably with eggs or cheese. Each capsule contains 300 mg of magnesium orotate, and the container holds 120 capsules.
Does magnesium orotate interact with other supplements or medicines?+
High levels of calcium and zinc supplements can decrease magnesium absorption, while vitamin D and its derivatives may increase it. Magnesium may decrease the absorption of tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, and high doses could have additive effects with calcium channel blockers. Consult your doctor if you are using blood pressure medication.
Is magnesium orotate safe during pregnancy?+
The product information states it is safe at normal dosage levels during pregnancy and lactation. As always, speak to your healthcare provider before starting any supplement while pregnant or nursing.

PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Magnesium orotate is a magnesium salt of orotic acid which is at the same time a magnesium chelate. Being a chelate of magnesium, it does not dissociate into magnesium ions and orotate ions like other magnesium salts. Instead, the whole complex molecule of magnesium orotate is absorbed as such and transported to organs in the body where it is utilised. Because of the presence of orotic acid (a pyrimidine) in the molecule, magnesium orotate is transported to sites in the body where active pyrimidine metabolism occurs, such as the heart muscle. Magnesium supports normal muscle function, including the heart. Because of this special transport mechanism, lower doses of magnesium orotate can be used than of some other magnesium preparations such as magnesium chloride.
