Exploring the World of Medicinal Mushrooms:

From Lion's Mane to Reishi, Chaga to Cordyceps — medicinal mushrooms have a long history of traditional use across many cultures. But what exactly sets them apart from psychedelic varieties?

Brain fog by mid-morning? Catching every bug your kids bring home from school? Heard people raving about Lion's Mane and Reishi but not sure if it's wisdom or just a wellness trend? Medicinal mushrooms are having a moment — and for once, the hype has centuries of traditional use and a growing pile of research behind it.

Here's our honest guide: what each mushroom actually does, which one fits your problem, and what to know before you buy.

What we'd suggest (the short version)

  • For focus, memory and brain fog: Lion's Mane.
  • For stress, poor sleep and immune support: Reishi, taken in the evening.
  • For energy, stamina and training: Cordyceps, taken in the morning.
  • For antioxidant and immune support: Chaga or Turkey Tail.
  • Can't choose? A mushroom complex covers several bases in one product.
  • Give them 6–8 weeks of daily use — mushrooms build benefits slowly; they're not a double espresso.
  • On chronic medication, pregnant, or being treated for cancer? Chat to your doctor before starting.

First, the question everyone whispers

No — these are not those mushrooms. Medicinal mushrooms like Lion's Mane, Reishi and Cordyceps contain bioactive compounds (beta-glucans, triterpenes, hericenones) that support immunity, brain function and energy. Psychedelic mushrooms contain psilocybin and alter your state of mind. Completely different fungi, completely different purpose. Nothing in this article will make your morning commute more colourful.

Lion's Mane mushroom

1. Lion's Mane — the brain one

Those cascading white tendrils earned it the name, and centuries of use in Chinese medicine earned it the reputation. Lion's Mane contains compounds thought to stimulate nerve growth factor — which is why it's the mushroom for memory, focus and long-term brain health. If you're a student, juggling a demanding job, or just tired of walking into rooms and forgetting why, this is where we'd start. Many of our customers report clearer thinking within 4–6 weeks of daily use.

What we stock:

Reishi mushrooms

2. Reishi — the calm-and-immunity one

Known in Asia as the "mushroom of immortality" — we'll settle for better sleep and fewer colds. Reishi is an adaptogen: it helps your body handle stress, supports immune function and improves sleep quality. If you're wired-but-tired, run down, or lying awake replaying the day, Reishi in the evening is our pick. It's bitter as a tea, so capsules or extracts are the easier route.

What we stock:

Cordyceps mushrooms

3. Cordyceps — the energy one

Tibetan herders and mountain climbers used Cordyceps for endurance at altitude long before athletes discovered it. It supports oxygen utilisation, stamina and energy production — which makes it a favourite with runners, gym-goers and anyone whose energy flatlines by lunchtime. Take it in the morning or pre-workout, not at night. It's also traditionally used for libido and sexual health, if that's on the list.

What we stock:

Chaga mushroom on birch tree

4. Chaga — the antioxidant one

Chaga grows on birch trees in Siberia and Northern Europe and looks like burnt charcoal — which hints at its standout feature: one of the highest antioxidant contents of any natural food. It supports immune function, helps calm inflammation, and is traditionally used for blood sugar balance and skin health. If your goals are "general defence and ageing well", Chaga earns its shelf space.

What we stock:

Turkey Tail mushrooms

5. Turkey Tail — the immune-modulating one

Named for its fan of colourful rings, Turkey Tail is one of the most-studied medicinal mushrooms in the world, particularly for its immune-modulating polysaccharides (PSK and PSP). It's used as supportive care alongside conventional cancer treatment in parts of Asia — promising research, though always under medical supervision, never instead of treatment. For everyday use, it's a solid immune and gut-health ally.

What we stock:

Turkey Tail brownies

Bonus: Turkey Tail brownies (yes, really)

One of our favourite ways to sneak functional food past the family — all the benefits of Turkey Tail, cacao and CBD in one tray of brownies:

  • 3/4 cup runny tahini or peanut butter (not the dry, thick kind)
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp cacao powder
  • 4–6 tsp Turkey Tail powder
  • 1 Soaring Free Superherb Zero-Sugar Bar, chopped into small chunks
  • Up to 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • Melted cacao butter for the right consistency
  • 1/5 tsp Himalayan salt
  • 2 eggs (optional, for the non-vegan version)

Combine the wet ingredients, combine the dry, mix together, scoop onto a cacao-butter-lined tray and bake at 180°C until slightly crisp on top (15–20 minutes).

Shiitake mushrooms

6. Shiitake — the one you can braai

The only mushroom on this list that's as happy in your pan as in a capsule. Shiitake has over a thousand years of culinary and medicinal history in East Asia: immune-supporting compounds, anti-inflammatory properties, heart health benefits and digestive support. Cook with fresh ones, or get concentrated benefits from a supplement.

What we stock:

Maitake mushrooms

7. Maitake — the metabolic one

Japanese for "dancing mushroom" — apparently foragers danced when they found one. Maitake supports immune function, cardiovascular health, blood pressure and blood sugar balance, making it especially interesting if metabolic health is your focus.

The honest bottom line

Medicinal mushrooms are genuinely useful — but they're slow medicine. Pick the one that matches your main complaint, take it daily, and give it 6–8 weeks before you judge. And if brain fog, exhaustion or constant illness is severe or getting worse, that's a doctor conversation first; mushrooms support a healthy body, they don't diagnose an unhealthy one.
