What it’s all about
GOTS certified organic cotton super tampons with a smooth easy-glide cardboard applicator, which is completely biodegradable. Just twist to release and push. The Natracare applicator has a rounded tip for easy insertion.
Many tampon applicators are made from petroleum-based plastic or plant-based plastics. Neither type will biodegrade, potentially contributing to worldwide plastic pollution. Of equal concern, these plastics could contain hormone disrupting phthalates or inappropriate plastic additives, which can be absorbed through the skin.
There are rayon-blended tampons, and even some claiming to be organic, that are cloaked in a plastic veil to try to prevent the internal core from shedding fibres during use. They may also have added fragrances, lubricants or dyes, which is totally unnecessary for managing your period.
This is why we only ever use 100% organic cotton. We never use GM cotton or unnecessary plastic, so we keep your vagina free from pesticide residues, plastic or chemicals of concern.
Organic license number GOTS-11347, certified by The Soil Association.
FAQs
Q: “Are applicator tampons easier to use?”
Applicator tampons are designed to help insert a tampon. Some people prefer applicator tampons as a simple, more hands-free way to use tampons. It’s a matter of personal preference whether this is easier for you.
Q: “How to use an applicator tampon?”
Natracare applicators are made with biodegradable cardboard. Twist the two applicator halves to loosen the applicator so it’s ready to push. Place the top of the applicator at the opening of your vagina, then press the bottom half upwards to push the tampon out through the top of the applicator.
Q: “Why use a cardboard applicator?”
Our cardboard applicator is completely recyclable or compostable. Some companies use “plant-based applicators”, but Greenpeace discovered this bio-plastic material is the same structure as oil-based plastic and will not biodegrade! Plant-based plastic applicators pollute in the same damaging way to the environment as petroleum plastic after use.
Q: “What tampon absorbency should I choose?”
Always go for the lowest absorbency that you need. During your period, you may find you use different absorbencies because your flow is lighter at the beginning or end of your period.
Q: “How often should I change my tampon?”
It’s important to change your tampons regularly, every 3 to 4 hours, and alternate between using tampons and pads. It is not recommended that you wear a tampon when you are sleeping because you will most likely be leaving it in too long. Read the instruction leaflet found in the tampon packs for how to use tampons safely to avoid risks associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).
Q: “Can you flush cardboard applicators?”
No, you shouldn’t flush tampon applicators or tampons. Natracare applicators are made from biodegradable cardboard but are not suitable for flushing. Card doesn’t have time to break down properly after flushing so would contribute to blockages. The best way to dispose of the applicator is either to compost or with your regular waste.
Q: “How should I dispose of Natracare organic tampons and packaging?”
Our tampons are 100% cotton, meaning they are compostable. You can find out how to compost tampons here. If you don’t have a compost bin, tampons should be disposed of with your regular waste. Please don’t flush your tampons.
The packaging is made from recycled cardboard , the tampon wrapper from paper and the applicator from cardboard
Q: “Do Natracare tampons contain heavy metals?”
We share consumers concerns for the discovery of heavy metals found in some brands of tampons. It’s a founding principle of Natracare, since 1989, to make organic tampons to help reduce unnecessary exposure to chemicals of concern. To guarantee the safety and quality of our tampons, we’re certified to the Global Organic Textiles Standard – the gold standard for tampons.
As part of our annual organic certification audit, tests for detecting heavy metals were commissioned by our certifier, The Soil Association, by third-party accredited laboratories. We’re making our test results publicly available to offer peace of mind and to offer full transparency.
Natracare organic tampons showed no detectable traces of heavy metals or other chemicals of concern.
How to use
HOW TO INSERT THE TAMPON
1) Wash your hands before unwrapping and inserting a tampon
2) Use only one tampon at a time
3) Unwrap tampon and check that the cord hangs loose in the inner tube. Do not place the tampon on a surface or handle it more than necessary.
4) Holding the tubes lightly with both hands, give the tubes a half twist to loosen the tubes then hold the applicator at the grooved rings of the outer tube between your thumb and middle finger.
5) With your other hand, open the folds of skin around the vagina and using your longest finger, glide the rounded tip of the applicator into the vagina gently pushing upwards and backwards towards the small of the back.
6) If you can still feel the tampon it needs to be pushed further into the vagina.
Do not insert the tampon if it hurts to do so
7) Now remove the card applicator making sure that the withdrawal cord is hanging freely ready for when you need to remove the tampon. Dispose of the biodegradable applicator into your waste or composting bin.
TO REMOVE YOUR TAMPON
1) Wash your hands
2) Allow your pelvic muscles to relax and gently pull the cord downwards and forwards until the tampon is removed.
3) If the tampon is dry and difficult to remove after using for a maximum of 4 hours, the absorbency you are using is too high.
3) wrap the tampon and place in the waste bin. Remember to wash your hands again.
Always remember to remove the last tampon at the end of your period

Use the chart to select the minimum absorbency to control your menstrual flow and reduce the risk of getting TSS. Absorbency ranges and terms are standard for all tampons industry-wide.
ATTENTION: Tampons are associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) a rare but serious disease that may cause death. Read and save the enclosed information.
From the instruction leaflet in the pack – CAUTION: Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is a rare, but serious illness that can progress rapidly to a serious illness that may cause death, and therefore, must be recognised and treated early.
It is caused by a toxin produced by a type of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus).
TSS can occur in both males and females of any age; but is more common in young women who use tampons during their period.
You can avoid the risk of getting tampon related menstrual TSS by not using tampons and you can reduce your risk by alternating tampon use with sanitary pads use during your period. Do not use tampons if you have ever been diagnosed with TSS.
Do not use a tampon when you are not menstruating.
SYMPTOMS may not all be present at the same time but include:
Sudden fever (102°F, 39°C or higher); nausea or vomiting; diarrhoea; headache; sore throat; dizziness; fainting or near fainting; chills; confusion; weakness; muscular pain; rash that looks like sun-burn; peeling skin.
IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS
Remove your tampon and get immediate medical attention. Make sure the health care professional treating you knows that you were using a tampon when the symptoms started.
TSS can recur with or without further tampon use. If you have had TSS or the warning signs of TSS in the past, consult your doctor before using tampons.
PRECAUTIONS
Consult a doctor if you have recently given birth, had a caesarean section, a miscarriage, an abortion or any operation on your reproductive system.
Tampons are not sterile and neither are the hands or vagina. Tampons whilst containing small amounts of bacteria normally present in the air, have not been shown to carry the bacteria that causes TSS. Do not place an unwrapped tampon on any surface before use.
Always use the lowest absorbency tampon to absorb your menstrual flow. Do not use a larger tampon to avoid changing tampons more frequently. Regardless of when you use them, change your tampon every 3 to 4 hours or more if needed. Change to a sanitary pad at night or when your flow is light.
Absorbency terms in grams: Light – less than or equal to 6g; Regular – greater than 6g less than 9g (approx. 8g, suitable for light flow); Super – greater than 9g less than 12g (approx. 11g, suitable for medium flow); Super Plus – greater than 12g less than 15g (approx. 14g, suitable for heavy flow); Ultra – greater than 15g up to 18g.
Please don’t flush your tampons.
