PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
One of calcium D-glucarate’s main functions in the body is to promote the elimination of toxins, especially abnormally high and harmful levels of steroid hormones such as estrogens and testosterone. In this manner the body is protected against the harmful effects of these hormones. Conjugation (coupling with water soluble molecules such as glucuronic acid, glucuronidation) is a detoxification process that occurs in the liver when toxins, carcinogens and hormones are coupled with water soluble molecules (“carriers”) thus making them more easily removed from the body. These glucuronides are then excreted for elimination. However, an enzyme in the gut (beta-glucuronidase) may hydrolyze (split) these conjugates back into the carrier molecules and the toxins. The toxins (hormones) are then reabsorbed into the blood stream where they may be responsible for undesirable effects. D-glucaric acid has been shown to inhibit this process, i.e. it acts by inhibiting the enzyme beta-glucuronidase which deconjugates (breaks bonds between) the toxins, hormones and carrier molecules.
In a similar manner, other carcinogenic toxins in the blood are also removed. The end result is that estrogen and other toxins, bound to glucuronic acid for excretion, remain bound and are therefore excreted thereby reducing the body load.
Excessively high levels of estrogen are a major concern for women and have been shown to be associated with increased risk for uterine fibroids, endometriosis, fibrocystic breasts and even premenstrual syndrome in animal and human studies (Cancer Bulletin, 1993, 45: 453).

Pregnancy, breast feeding.

INTERACTIONS
The removal of drugs that undergo glucuronidation from the circulation may be increased. These include paracetamol, lipitor, valium, digoxin, estrogen and other similar compounds.

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Due to the lack of reliable evidence, it is recommended that the product should not be used during pregnancy and breast feeding, although no adverse effects have been reported.

DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS OF USE
For general use, two to three capsules per day with meals are recommended. Up to six capsules per day may be used if necessary. Not to be used in children under the age of 12 years.
