Da Chai Hu Tang

Treats the following symptoms:


Thorowax Purger is from Treatise on Febrile Diseases” written by Zhang Zhongjing in the late Eastern Han Dynasty in China. It is made from Shaoyang Formula by removing ginseng and liquorice and adding rhei, citrus aurantium and paeonia lactiflora. Its effect is mainly to reconcile the Liver and Gallbladder to purge. It is used for disharmony of Shaoyang, Liver and Gallbladder Damp Heat, the manifestation of upper abdominal pain and fullness like a nodular mass or discomfort, bitter mouth, nausea or vomiting, constipation, yellow, greasy red tongue, pulse string or slippage. In modern clinic it is used to treat pancreatitis and cholecystitis.

Contra-indicated during pregnancy.

 

 

ABDOMINAL PAIN (PAIN IN THE BOWELS)

Typical symptoms:

abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea

Disease description:

Abdominal pain is more likely caused by the intestines. Small intestine pain occurs at the level of the navel and below. If the large intestine is also affected, the pain can also occur just below the ribcage. Often, cramps of the intestine are accompanied by noises like rumbling. Abdominal pain is often accompanied by nausea, diarrhoea, flatulence or vomiting.

Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:

There are Liver, Gallbladder, Spleen, Kidney, Intestine, Bladder and other organs in the abdominal cavity. Moreover, the meridians of Six Yin, Shaoyang of the feet, Yangming of the hands and feet, Chong, Ren and Dai are distributed in the abdomen or abdominal cavity. Attacks by outside Evil, improper diet or visceral dysfunction, can cause blockage of Qi and Blood. A lack of Qi and Blood can’t nourish anymore and can produce abdominal pain.

Possible syndromes causing these problems:

Cold Stagnation

Cold blocks Qi causing abdominal pain (better for warmth and pressure), watery diarrhoea, a cold feeling in the abdomen.

Intestinal Heat

Shaoyang disorder with Heat accumulating in the Yangming Fu. Heat obstructs the intestine leading to abdominal pain that is worse for pressure, hypochondriac and chest tightness, dry stools or constipation, dry mouth, bad breath, thirst, vomiting, red tongue.

Intestinal Damp-Heat

Damp Heat causes Blockage and pain where patient could feel abdominal pain worse for pressure and hot food, stools with a foul smell, mucus and/or blood in the stool, burning sensation in the anus, tenesmus and thirst.
