What is Chinaherb Smooth Intestine?+

Smooth Intestine is the classical Chinese formula Tong Xie Yao Fang, from Danxi's Mastery of Medicine published in 1481 AD. In traditional Chinese medicine terms it smooths the Liver, strengthens the Spleen and removes Dampness and Heat.

What is Smooth Intestine traditionally used for?+

It is the traditional formula for a digestive rhythm that has lost its balance — abdominal discomfort with loose stools, rumbling bowel sounds, mucus in the stool, or bowel habits that swing between loose and hard. In TCM this pattern is often stress-linked, described as the Liver disturbing the Spleen.

Why would stress upset my stomach, in the TCM view?+

Smooth Intestine comes from the “Danxi’s Mastery of Medicine” published by Zhu Danxi in the Yuan Dynasty in 1481 AD. It is a representative formulation for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. Chinese medicine believes that the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome is a “Stagnation of the Liver and Deficiency of Spleen, Dampness and Heat of the intestines“. Liver Stagnation leads to the Qi Stagnation and causes pain; Spleen Deficiency and Intestinal Dampness cause bowel sound with pain, bowel diarrhoea, abdominal pain during diarrhoea and pain relief after diarrhoea, mucus stool. Smooth Intestine smoothes the Liver, strengthen the Spleen and removes Dampness and Heat.

The irritable bowel syndrome, chronic ulcerative colitis, allergic colitis and other chronic intestinal diseases can be treated with Smooth Intestine. This formula can effectively improve intestinal permeability and enhance intestinal mucosal barrier function.

 

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

Disease description:

The irritable bowel is one of the most common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Diagnosed when a doctor has ruled out other possible causes, it is based on a functional disorder of the intestine and manifests itself through long-lasting or recurring abdominal pain, a feeling of fullness and diarrhoea or constipation, which occurs for a total of at least three months within a year.

Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:

Chinese Medicine believes in the early stage of this disease, the Spleen and Liver are out of balance. For a long time, the Spleen Deficiency can do further damages to both, Kidney and Spleen.

Possible syndromes causing these problems:

Disharmony of Liver and Spleen with Heat

Stagnant Liver Qi leads to Heat and Rebellious Liver Qi invading and disrupting Spleen and intestinal function leading to alternating constipation and diarrhoea, cramping abdominal pain relieved by bowel movements (dry and bitty or loose stool), flatulence, mucus in the stool.
