Common questions

What is Chinaherb Relieve Stomach Stagnation used for?+

Relieve Stomach Stagnation (Bao He Wan) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine formula for indigestion and what TCM calls Food Stagnation — the fullness, distension, belching, acid reflux, nausea and bad breath that follow overeating. It promotes digestion, removes Blockage and harmonises the Stomach.

Is Relieve Stomach Stagnation suitable for children?+

Yes — the product information states this formula is suitable for adults and children. Check the label for directions, and speak to your healthcare provider if you are unsure.

Can this formula help with bad breath?+

According to the TCM explanation for this product, over-eaten food can stagnate in the Stomach, spoil and ferment, causing Stomach Qi to retrograde and bad breath to develop — the Food Stagnation pattern, often with belching and abdominal distension. Relieve Stomach Stagnation is the formula recommended for that pattern; where the picture is Stomach Heat (thirst, dry stools, red swollen gums), a different formula is suggested, so our consultants can help you tell the difference.

How old is the Bao He Wan formula?+

It comes from 'Danxi's Mastery of Medicine', edited by Zhu Danxi of the Yuan Dynasty and published in 1347 AD. It has been used for Stagnation of the Stomach and indigestion ever since.

Product details

保和丸 / Bao He Wan

Treats the following symptoms:

Relieve Stomach Stagnation comes from the “Danxi’s Mastery of Medicine” edited by Zhu Danxi, from the Yuan Dynasty published in 1347 AD. It is used for indications of Stagnation of the Stomach and indigestion. The Stagnation is caused by overeating, or originally, the Spleen and Stomach were weak, overeating leads to further damage to the Spleen and Stomach (lower gastric motility, gastrointestinal “overload“). The undigested turbid food stagnated in the Stomach which causes fullness and distension of stomach and abdomen, poor appetite, constipation or loose stools, foul smelling stool, thick tongue coating, and slippery pulse. The failure of Stomach descending causes nausea and vomiting and hiccups (involuntary intermittent contraction of the diaphragm, causing air to be suddenly drawn into the respiratory tract and digestive tract), belching and acid reflux, as well as bad breath. This formula promotes digestion, removes Blockage, and harmonises the Stomach. Suitable for adults and children.

BAD BREATH (HALITOSIS OF STOMACH ORIGIN)

Typical symptoms:

bad breath (halitosis)

Disease description:

Bad smelling breath or foul-smelling mouth or nose (halitosis) is a common problem worldwide. It increases with age and can be extremely stressful for those affected. Halitosis is usually caused by problems in the oral cavity and throat. If, however, good dental hygiene can rule them out, then bad breath can be the first sign of an undetected inflammation of the stomach lining, a gastritis. On top of that, we live in a stressful time and the demands of people can be very challenging most of the time. As is well known, stress hits the stomach, which leads to diseases, and as a consequence halitosis can develop from within.

Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:

Chinese medicine believes that the physiological function of the Stomach is to receive and transform the food. Excessive consumption of hot-natured foods such as spicy food, red meat, wine, coffee may disturb the normal functions of the Spleen and Stomach. Stomach Qi will retrograde and cause bad breath. This is called the Stomach Heat Syndrome; also overeating can damage the digestive function of the Spleen and Stomach, the over-eaten food will stagnate in the Stomach, spoil and ferment, Stomach Qi will retrograde, produce Heat and then cause bad breath, which is then called Food Stagnation. Stomach Heat or Food Stagnation may also be accompanied by some symptoms such as bloating, hiccups, stomach acid, like drinking cold, dry stools, yellow urine, yellow tongue coating.

Possible syndromes causing these problems:

Stomach Heat

Heat disturbs the function of the Stomach, consuming Yin and causing foul breath, a dry mouth, thirst, dry stools or constipation, red, swollen gums and toothache.

Recommended formulas to use:

Food Stagnation

Food Stagnation disrupts Stomach function and generates Heat, leading to belching and bad breath, epigastric and abdominal distension.
