Relieve Stomach Stagnation comes from the “Danxi’s Mastery of Medicine” edited by Zhu Danxi, from the Yuan Dynasty published in 1347 AD. It is used for indications of Stagnation of the Stomach and indigestion. The Stagnation is caused by overeating, or originally, the Spleen and Stomach were weak, overeating leads to further damage to the Spleen and Stomach (lower gastric motility, gastrointestinal “overload“). The undigested turbid food stagnated in the Stomach which causes fullness and distension of stomach and abdomen, poor appetite, constipation or loose stools, foul smelling stool, thick tongue coating, and slippery pulse. The failure of Stomach descending causes nausea and vomiting and hiccups (involuntary intermittent contraction of the diaphragm, causing air to be suddenly drawn into the respiratory tract and digestive tract), belching and acid reflux, as well as bad breath. This formula promotes digestion, removes Blockage, and harmonises the Stomach. Suitable for adults and children.

Disease description:

Bad smelling breath or foul-smelling mouth or nose (halitosis) is a common problem worldwide. It increases with age and can be extremely stressful for those affected. Halitosis is usually caused by problems in the oral cavity and throat. If, however, good dental hygiene can rule them out, then bad breath can be the first sign of an undetected inflammation of the stomach lining, a gastritis. On top of that, we live in a stressful time and the demands of people can be very challenging most of the time. As is well known, stress hits the stomach, which leads to diseases, and as a consequence halitosis can develop from within.

Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:

Chinese medicine believes that the physiological function of the Stomach is to receive and transform the food. Excessive consumption of hot-natured foods such as spicy food, red meat, wine, coffee may disturb the normal functions of the Spleen and Stomach. Stomach Qi will retrograde and cause bad breath. This is called the Stomach Heat Syndrome; also overeating can damage the digestive function of the Spleen and Stomach, the over-eaten food will stagnate in the Stomach, spoil and ferment, Stomach Qi will retrograde, produce Heat and then cause bad breath, which is then called Food Stagnation. Stomach Heat or Food Stagnation may also be accompanied by some symptoms such as bloating, hiccups, stomach acid, like drinking cold, dry stools, yellow urine, yellow tongue coating.

Disease description:

Indigestion is a collective term for complaints of the digestive organs. In most cases, the causes are harmless, such as eating too fast or eating spicy, greasy and fatty foods. Sometimes the reason for indigestion is to be found in rather serious illnesses like inflammation of the stomach, ulcers, pancreas inflammation, intestinal blockage or reduced blood flow in the intestine. Symptoms of indigestion may be felt occasionally or as often as daily. Common symptoms are stomach aches, diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence, heartburn, acid reflux and fatigue.

Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:

Chinese medicine believes that Spleen and Stomach play the main role in completing the digestion and absorption of the diet. Indigestion is mainly due to the failure of Spleen and Stomach function. Since the digestion process also requires help from Liver Qi, the dysfunction of the Spleen, Stomach and Liver is the most common cause of indigestion. Overeating can also damage the Spleen and Stomach, leading to accumulation of food. High life pressure result in Liver Qi Stagnation, and further blocks Spleen function. Depression can also lead to gastrointestinal dysfunction, forming Dampness, Heat, Phlegm or Blood Stasis which blocking the Spleen and Stomach.

When there is Spleen Qi Deficiency, it fails to transform and transport, causing indigestion, distension after eating, poor appetite, loose stools and fatigue.

Disease description:

Nausea is an unpleasant feeling in the upper abdomen with loss of appetite and possibly a feeling of pressure and cramps in the lower throat. Sometimes dizziness, vague abdominal discomfort and unwillingness to eat, as well as increased salivation are also possible. Vomiting results in the emptying of stomach contents via the mouth. Nausea and vomiting occur with dysfunctions of the digestive tract, especially in inflammation of the digestive tract (gastroenteritis), as well as with drugs and other toxins.

Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:

Nausea and vomiting are caused by disharmony of Stomach function such as Spleen Qi Deficiency, Cold, Damp or Heat attack Stomach, which cause reverse movement of Stomach Qi, and leading to diet, Phlegmand other gastric contents rising from the Stomach.

Exterior Wind-Cold and Interior Damp

An invasion of External Wind-Cold with Interior Damp can reverse the movement of Stomach Qi precipitating a sudden onset of nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, aversion to cold and headache. This pattern may be associated with acute gastroenteritis (viral or bacterial), food poisoning.
