桂枝汤 / Gui Zhi Tang

Cinnamon Formula (Gui Zhi Tang) was recorded in the “Treatise on Febrile Diseases”, published about 1900 years ago, and is one of the most famous classical formulas of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Chinese Medicine believes that the harmonisation of the Ying and Wei Qi is the basis of the body's resilience. “Ying” is a substance that nourishes Wei Qi and belongs to Yin; “Wei Qi” refers to the Defence Qi of the body's surface and belongs to Yang. Cinnamon Formula is the classic recipe for reconciling Ying and Wei Qi, and within the TCM framework is traditionally used for patterns of disharmony between them.

Tradition holds that the Shang Dynasty minister Yi Yin, a brilliant chef, first prepared Cinnamon Formula by combining his experience of herbs with cooking techniques — its main ingredients of cinnamon, ginger, liquorice and jujube are still commonly used in the kitchen as seasoning.

Contra-indicated in pregnancy (max. 3 days, normal dosage).

Use under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Consult a healthcare practitioner before use, particularly if you are taking other medication.
