What our consultants would suggest

Iron is the most-missed mineral in pre-menopausal women, athletes and vegetarians — but the wrong form constipates and the wrong dose is wasted. Our consultants would suggest iron bisglycinate ("soft iron") or a liquid plant-iron complex at 15–20mg of elemental iron daily, taken with vitamin C and away from coffee/tea/calcium.

Test, don't guess — your GP can run ferritin in 5 minutes and interpret the result. WhatsApp us and we'll help you choose a gentle, well-absorbed form.

Common questions

Which iron is gentlest on the stomach?

Iron bisglycinate (soft iron) is the gentlest — minimal constipation. Liquid plant iron (Floradix, Spatone) is also well-tolerated. Skip ferrous sulphate as a daily — it works but most people stop taking it because of GI upset.

How much iron should I take?

For maintenance: 15–20mg elemental iron daily. For diagnosed deficiency: your GP will set the loading dose. Don't self-load high-dose iron — it can mask other conditions and overload the body.

When should I take iron?

Morning, with vitamin C, away from coffee/tea/calcium. Vitamin C boosts absorption 2–3x. Tannins (tea/coffee) and calcium block it. Many people split the dose: half morning, half mid-afternoon.

Should men take iron?

Usually no. Men don't lose iron through menstruation and accumulating it can cause real harm. Only supplement if you have diagnosed deficiency (low ferritin) or you're a heavy-training athlete. Ask your GP first.

From the counter

The energy mineral, minus the misery

Half the iron conversations at our counter start with “the last one hurt my stomach.” It doesn't have to: modern gentle forms — bisglycinate chelates and food-state iron like our bestselling Soft Iron Boost — deliver the mineral without the constipation old-school ferrous sulphate is famous for. Menstruating women, teens in growth spurts, plant-based eaters and tired new mothers fill most of this bay's baskets.

Test, then supplement

Iron is the one mineral we actively encourage you to confirm with a blood test — too much is as real a problem as too little, and fatigue has many authors. Pair iron with vitamin C for absorption; keep it hours away from tea, coffee and calcium. Iron contributes to normal energy metabolism and red blood cell formation. Bring us your test numbers on WhatsApp and we'll suggest a sensible bottle, free.
