The Winter Immunity Stack We Actually Hand Over the Counter

Every June the same question crosses the counter. Here is the three-product answer our consultants give — and the two things we tell people to stop buying.

Every June it starts. Someone leans on the counter, already sniffing, and asks the same question: "What must I take so I don't get what everyone at work has?"

After thirty years of winters behind this counter, here's the honest answer — three products, and just as importantly, two things we routinely tell people to put back on the shelf.

Why winter actually gets you

It isn't the cold itself. Highveld winters pack us into closed taxis, heated offices and indoor gatherings with the windows shut — more shared air, more shared viruses. At the same time, shorter days mean less sun on your skin, and your vitamin D — a real workhorse of immune function — drifts down right when you need it most. Add the dry winter air drying out the protective lining of your nose and throat, and the maths is simple: more exposure, less defence.

The stack we hand over

1. Echinacea — but the right one, started early. The fresh-plant tinctures are what the better studies actually used, which is why Echinaforce is the bottle our consultants reach for first. The trick nobody tells you: it works best before you're sick. Starting it the day your throat already burns is like buying an umbrella in the rain — some help, but you're already wet.

2. Vitamin C at an honest dose, daily. Not the fizzy orange sweetie with 80mg hiding behind the flavouring — a proper 1,000mg, every day through winter. Buffered versions matter if your stomach complains; the bioflavonoids in a complex help it do its job. C won't make you bulletproof. What the evidence supports is shorter, milder colds — which, in a Joburg winter, is worth a lot.

3. Vitamin D, the quiet one. This is the one most people skip and the one we'd argue hardest for. Office workers see almost no skin-on-sun time from June to August, and low vitamin D is one of the most consistent findings in people who catch everything going around. A daily spray takes three seconds and removes the "I hate swallowing pills" excuse entirely.

The two things we tell people NOT to buy

Here's the part that surprises people. First: the mega-dose "immune bombs" with twenty ingredients at doses too small to matter. You're paying for the label, not the contents. Second: doubling up — if your daily multivitamin already carries decent zinc and C, adding three more zinc products doesn't build a fortress, it builds expensive urine and an upset stomach. Bring us what you're already taking (or WhatsApp us a photo of the labels) and we'll tell you honestly what's missing — sometimes the answer is "nothing".

If you'd rather have it done for you

The full Winter Immunity protocol is the version of this our consultants signed off — the complete stack, bundled at 10% off with DISPENSARY10 (orders over R600), free delivery included. One decision instead of five.

And if you're somewhere between "healthy" and "everyone around me is coughing" and not sure what's worth it — WhatsApp us. Telling you not to buy something is still our favourite kind of advice.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start taking echinacea?

Before you are sick, not after. The fresh-plant tinctures the better studies used work best taken through the season. Starting the day your throat already burns is like buying an umbrella in the rain — some help, but you are already wet.

Does vitamin C stop me getting colds?

No — it will not make you bulletproof. What the evidence supports is shorter, milder colds when taken daily through winter at an honest 1,000mg, not the 80mg hiding behind the flavouring in a fizzy sweet.

I already take a multivitamin — do I need more zinc and C?

Probably not. Doubling up does not build a fortress, it builds expensive urine and an upset stomach. Bring us what you take, or WhatsApp a photo of the labels, and we will tell you honestly what is missing — sometimes nothing.
