Our Guide to Healthy Weight Loss
Sustainable weight loss doesn't require extreme diets or quick fixes — it starts with practical, evidence-based habits you can maintain long-term.
Lost the same 3kg twice this year? Eating "clean" all week, then undoing it at the Saturday braai, and by 3pm you're tired, puffy and reaching for something sweet? You're not lazy — most weight loss advice just isn't built for real life.

Here's what we'd actually focus on, what we'd skip, and when the problem isn't a food problem at all.
What we'd suggest (the short version)
- Build every plate around protein and veg — it's the single biggest craving-killer.
- Fix blood sugar first. If your energy crashes mid-afternoon, weight loss will always feel like a fight.
- Sleep 7–9 hours. Skimp here and your hunger hormones work against you, no matter how good your diet is.
- Give it 6–8 weeks before you judge anything. About 0.5kg a week is a genuine win.
- Supplements support the work — they don't do it for you. If nothing shifts after two months of honest effort, come chat to us. Sometimes it's thyroid, stress or sleep, not willpower.
1. Build your meals around real, nutrient-dense food
Quality matters as much as quantity. Nutrient-dense food keeps you full, keeps energy steady and quietens cravings. Build your plate around:
- Lean proteins: chicken, turkey, tofu and legumes keep you full and protect muscle.
- Whole grains: quinoa, basmati or brown rice, gluten-free oats and whole-wheat options for steady energy.
- Healthy fats: avocado, nuts, seeds and olive oil keep blood sugar stable and hunger quiet.
- Fruit and veg: high in fibre and water, low in kilojoules — and eat them raw where you can.

2. Drink water before you decide you're hungry
Thirst is brilliant at disguising itself as hunger. Water also helps your body metabolise stored fat. Aim for at least 2 litres a day, drink a glass between meals, and use herbal teas or infused water when plain water gets boring. A good mineral supplement helps your body actually hold onto that hydration — browse our mineral range.
3. Sort out your blood sugar
Stable blood sugar is the difference between cruising past the vending machine and raiding it. To keep it level:
- Choose complex carbs over simple sugars for a slow, steady glucose release.
- Pair carbs with protein or fat to slow digestion and blunt the spike.
- Skip sugary snacks and drinks — try a low-GI sugar alternative like glycine instead.

4. Move your body — and recover properly
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week, mixing what you actually enjoy:
- Cardio: walking, cycling, swimming — good for the heart and the kilojoule burn.
- Strength training: weights or bodyweight work builds muscle, and muscle raises your metabolism.
- Flexibility and balance: yoga and stretching keep you injury-free and consistent.
Recovery: glutamine and whey protein
If you're training, recovery is where the results happen:
- Glutamine: supports muscle repair, immune function and the gut lining (which takes strain during hard training). Take 5–10g within 30 minutes after training, and an extra dose before bed for overnight repair.
- Whey protein: fast-digesting and amino-acid rich — 20–30g post-workout protects lean muscle while you lose fat. Vegan options are available too.
5. Sleep and stress: the hidden saboteurs
Poor sleep and constant stress (and yes, load-shedding evenings and deadline season count) disrupt ghrelin and leptin — the hormones that control hunger. That's why a bad night so reliably ends in a sugary, fatty day. Aim for 7–9 hours, and build in something that genuinely switches you off: breathing exercises, a walk, ten minutes of quiet.
Supplements that help when life is a lot:
6. Supplements that can support the journey
None of these replace the basics above — but they can make the work easier:
- Green tea extract: supports metabolism and fat burning.
- Garcinia cambogia: may reduce appetite and inhibit fat storage.
- Fibre (psyllium husk): keeps you fuller between meals.
- L-Carnitine: helps the body convert fat into energy — best paired with exercise.
- CLA (conjugated linoleic acid): supports fat breakdown while preserving lean muscle, alongside diet and training.

7. Eat like you mean it
Mindful eating sounds fluffy, but it works: people who eat slowly and without distraction simply eat less.
- Put the phone down and switch the TV off at mealtimes.
- Eat slowly — your brain needs about 20 minutes to register fullness.
- Notice and appreciate your food — gratitude genuinely changes how you eat.
Make meals worth slowing down for with our superfoods collection.
8. Look after your gut
Your gut microbiome has a real say in your weight. Probiotics and prebiotics improve digestion, support immunity and can influence how your body stores energy. Eat yoghurt, kefir and sauerkraut, plus prebiotic fibre from garlic and onions — or add a quality probiotic from our probiotic range. Our in-store favourites:
- Flourish Probiotic
- Pro-Probiotic
- Rafaa
9. Track it, but track the right things
Forget the scale obsession. Celebrate non-scale victories — more energy, better sleep, jeans fitting better. A simple tracking app (MyFitnessPal and similar) keeps you honest, and surrounding yourself with people who back you keeps you going. Consistency over 6–8 weeks beats perfection over 6 days, every time.
When it isn't a food problem
If you've genuinely eaten well, moved and slept for two months and nothing's budging, stop blaming yourself. Thyroid issues, chronic stress, hormonal shifts and certain medications can all stall weight loss — and no supplement fixes those from the shelf. That's a conversation worth having, and we're happy to have it with you.
