Product details

Haritaki powder is made from the dried fruits of the Terminalia chebula tree and is one of the 3 ingredients in the popular Ayurveda formulation Triphala. Haritaki has a mixed taste and is rich in vitamin C and other antioxidant compounds. It has a long use as a traditional Ayurveda supplement for regular elimination, better digestion, increased energy, brain function and awareness.

Did you know?
Haritaki or Harada (Terminalia chebula) is also called the Tibetan "king of medicine".
Haritaki is the fruit of the tree, which is native to India, Nepal, Indonesia and other parts of Asia.
Haritaki has a mixture of 5 tastes: sweet, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent.
Haritaki is believed to balance all doshas (substances/bio-elements), especially vata.

Traditional uses of Haritaki include:

  • Digestion and regularity: Traditionally used in Ayurveda as a mild laxative to support comfortable, regular elimination and a healthy intestinal environment, and to support nutrient absorption.
  • Stomach comfort: Traditionally used in Ayurveda to support the stomach's own protective mucus production.
  • Weight management support: With digestion and regular elimination supported, cravings and hunger may be easier to keep in check as part of a balanced eating plan.
  • High in antioxidants: Haritaki is a rich source of antioxidants such as ellagic acid, gallic acid, chebulic acid, flavonol glycosides, selenium and vitamin C, which help the body counter everyday oxidative stress.
  • Mouth care tradition: In traditional Indian practice, a rinse made from crushed, dried Haritaki fruit boiled in water and cooled is swirled around the mouth. This can also be done with Haritaki powder.
  • Blood sugar note: If you use glucose-lowering medication, discuss the use of Haritaki with your healthcare practitioner before taking it.
  • Skin and hair tradition: A paste made from Haritaki powder and warm water is traditionally applied to problem skin (let the paste cool before use), and a paste with extra-virgin coconut oil is traditionally used on the hair and scalp.
