The flower that produces the vanilla bean lasts for only one day so growers have to inspect the flowers daily. Pure vanilla is also the second most expensive spice in the world, after saffron. It is also a less known fact that only the mellipona bee, found in central America, can pollinate the vanilla vine. All around the world, humans have taken to pollinating the plant by using a wooden needle.
