Ginger essential oil is also made up of about 90 percent sesquiterpenes, which are defensive agents that have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

When used in a massage oil, ginger is said to assist with inflammation. There are certain inflammatory markers in the body such as TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-10. These are said to cause inflammation, redness, and pain. Some initial studies on ginger have shown that it may alter these anti-inflammatory biomarkers — tiny compounds on a molecular level — and help lower them.
