Common questions
What is West Indian sandalwood oil used for?+
It may create a sense of calmness and greater mental clarity, which is why it is frequently used in meditation for its grounding effect. Its woody, sweet smell also makes it a common base for incense, perfumes, cosmetics, aftershaves and soaps.
Is sandalwood oil good for the skin?+
Sandalwood is considered beneficial to the skin — it can help soften the appearance of skin imperfections and supports a smooth-looking complexion. It is a mild astringent, which is why many aftershaves and facial toners include it to soothe, tighten and cleanse the skin; always test on a small area first or mix with a carrier oil.
What does West Indian sandalwood smell like?+
The scent is faintly woody, slightly oily-sweet and balsamic — a base note that is said to be calming. Over time the oil gradually loses its rich, complex odour and fades to a softer woody-balsamic note.
How is this sandalwood oil made, and where is it from?+
It is steam distilled from pieces of wood and branches of Amyris balsamifera, and the typical country of origin is Haiti. An older, more mature tree typically produces an oil with a stronger smell.
Are there any cautions with West Indian sandalwood oil?+
It has no known contra-indications other than that the aroma might not please everybody, but the standard care still applies: it may affect sensitive skin, keep it out of reach of children, and avoid contact with the eyes, inner ears and sensitive areas. If you are pregnant, nursing or under a doctor's care, consult your physician.

Sandalwood west indian essential oil can be used for:
An older, more mature sandalwood tree typically produces an essential oil with a stronger smell. Steam distillation or CO2 extraction methods are utilised to extract the oil from the mature roots. Sandalwood West Indian has traditionally been used for:
- Mental clarity: One of the primary sandalwood benefits is that it promotes mental clarity when used in aromatherapy or as a fragrance. This is why it’s often used for meditation, prayer, or other spiritual rituals.
- Relaxing and calming: Along with lavender and chamomile, sandalwood commonly makes the list of essential oils used in aromatherapy for winding down and settling the mind.
- Natural aphrodisiac: Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine traditionally use sandalwood as an aphrodisiac. To use sandalwood oil this way, try adding a couple of drops to a massage oil or to a topical lotion.
- Astringent: Sandalwood is a mild astringent, meaning it can induce minor contractions in the soft tissues, such as gums and skin. Many aftershaves and facial toners use sandalwood as one of their primary ingredients to help soothe, tighten, and cleanse the skin.
- Skin care: Always test the oil on a small area before applying it directly to the skin, or mix it with a base carrier oil first.
- Anti-ageing: Sandalwood is high in antioxidants that can help reduce damage caused by free radicals, which promote ageing.
- Mind: Possibly effective in easing nervous tension.
- Body: A soothing, settling quality, often chosen for quiet evening blends.
- Skin: May have a drying effect on the skin.
Blends well with: Benzoin, Clary sage, Frankincense, Galbanum, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Melissa, Rose, Rosewood and Ylang-Ylang.
