Apple pectin near me: what it is, where to find it, and the food that already has it

What apple pectin is, how it fits into your daily fibre, and how to find it at our counters.

Apple pectin is a soluble fibre taken from apples, the same stuff that makes jam set. You can find it at our Centurion, Glen Village and Edenvale counters; it is not listed on our online store today, so WhatsApp us on 076 913 5059 before you drive in and we will check the shelf.

Before you buy a tub or capsules, know this: whole apples, pears, oats, beans and dried fruit already carry soluble fibre. A supplement is a top-up, not a starting point.

Key takeaways

  • Apple pectin is a soluble fibre: it soaks up water and turns to gel.
  • The NHS (UK) advises adults to aim for 30 g of fibre a day from food.
  • Food first: whole fruit, oats, beans and lentils all carry soluble fibre.
  • Start any fibre slowly and drink water with it; see Before you use it.

What is apple pectin?

Pectin is a soluble fibre found in fruit, especially in apples and citrus peel. It is the ingredient that turns fruit juice into jam. Apple pectin is pectin extracted from apples and dried into a powder or put into capsules.

MedlinePlus (US National Library of Medicine) describes soluble fibre as fibre that attracts water and turns to gel during digestion. That gel is what sets pectin apart from the rough, bulky fibre in wheat bran.

Where can I buy apple pectin near me?

Apple pectin rings up at our counters, but it is not on our online store right now. Stock moves between our three stores, so send a WhatsApp to 076 913 5059 or ask at Centurion, Glen Village or Edenvale, and a consultant will check the shelf and hold one for you.

While you are there, ask to see the label. Check whether it is a powder or a capsule, how much pectin is in one serving, and what else is in it. Some pectin products are blended with other ingredients; you want to know exactly what you are taking.

Apple pectin from food

You do not need a supplement to eat pectin. Whole apples (skin on), pears, citrus fruit, berries and dried fruit all carry soluble fibre. Oats, barley, beans, lentils and peas add more.

The NHS (UK) advises adults to aim for 30 g of fibre a day and notes that most adults average about 20 g. For children it gives about 15 g at ages 2 to 5, about 20 g at 5 to 11 and about 25 g at 11 to 16. A bowl of oats with chopped dried apple, an apple at lunch and beans in the evening stew goes a long way towards that.

The NHS also suggests eating dried fruit with a meal rather than as a snack on its own, because it is sticky on the teeth. Our Almans dried apples and dried cling peaches work well stirred into cereal or baking.

How to start with apple pectin

  1. Start small. Take less than the full label serving for the first week and build up. A sudden jump in fibre can leave you uncomfortable.
  2. Drink water. Soluble fibre works by holding water, so take it with a full glass and keep drinking through the day.
  3. Keep it apart from medicines. Fibre can change how some medicines are taken up. Ask us or your pharmacist how far apart to take them.
  4. Follow the label for the serving and timing of the product in your hand.

When you do not need apple pectin

If you already eat fruit, vegetables, oats and legumes most days, a pectin supplement is unlikely to add much. Spend the money on a bag of apples instead.

And if you are thinking about apple pectin because something about your digestion has changed or keeps coming back, see a doctor first. A fibre supplement should not stand in for a proper look.

Apple pectin or another fibre?

Pectin is one of several soluble fibres. Psyllium husk, oat bran and beans are others. If you are choosing between them, the honest answer is that food comes first and the form you will actually take every day comes second. Browse our gut health shelf or the best-selling supplements across our tills, and ask a consultant to compare labels with you.

Before you use it. Read the label and start with a smaller serving, with plenty of water. Ask one of our consultants or your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, buying for a child, take prescription medicine (fibre can change how some medicines are taken up, so you may need to space them), or are under a doctor's care for your digestion.

Questions we get asked

Is apple pectin the same as eating an apple?

No. An apple gives you pectin along with other fibre, water and nutrients. A supplement gives you the pectin on its own. The NHS advice is to get fibre from a range of foods.
