五苓散 / Wu Ling San
Treats the following symptoms:
Expel Water Retention came out of “Treatise on Febrile Diseases” by Zhang Zhongjing in the late Eastern Han Dynasty. It has the effect of inducing urination to remove Water and Damp Retention, warming Yang and Qi to transport Water and Dampness. It is indicated for Water Retention Syndrome. The Water Retention Syndromes of Bladder referring to “Treatise on Febrile Disease”, is a series of symptoms caused by unfavourable transport of Water by the Bladder. This is resulting in Stagnation of Water in the body, such as oedema caused by water overflowing to the skin, vomiting caused by Stagnation of Water in the Stomach; watery diarrhoea caused by Water Stagnation in the Large Intestine; vertigo caused by Water overflowing and blocking head; cough and shortness of breath by Water Stagnating in the Lungs; palpitation by Water in Lung overflowing to the Heart. Clinically used to help acute and chronic nephritis, oedema, ascites due to liver cirrhosis, cardiogenic oedema, acute enteritis, urinary retention, hydrocephalus, which are Water Retention Syndromes in Chinese medicine.
Modern researches show that this Expel Water Retention can regulate the body’s water-salt balance and diuresis. It can inhibit the high expression of ETAR protein and mRNA in kidney tissue of patients with ADR nephropathy, which may be one of its mechanisms of reducing proteinuria in patients with ADR nephropathy.
CHRONIC HEART FAILURE
Disease description:
Heart failure is a long-term progressive heart disease that tends to get gradually worse over time. It can occur at any age but is most common in with the elderly. The pumping function of the heart is reduced, therefore not enough blood, oxygen and nutrients can reach organs and parts of the body. The most common signs are breathing difficulties, tiredness and listlessness, increased swelling (oedema) especially on the legs and ankles, chest pain or tightness, cold feeling in the limbs, coughing, weight gain, severe exhaustion, frequent nocturnal urination, dizziness and concentration problems.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Chinese medicine believes that the main cause of chronic heart failure is Heart Qi and Heart Yang Deficiency. Qi and Yang Deficiency further lead to Blood Stasis, water and sputum accumulation.
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Heart Qi Deficiency
Recommended formulas to use:
Heart and Kidney Yang Deficiency
Intolerance to cold, tiredness, shortness of breath, palpitations and a poor appetite.
Warm Middle Jiao, if oedema occur, use: Warm Middle Jiao + Expel Water Retention
Recommended formulas to use:
OEDEMA
Typical symptoms:
water retention (oedema)Disease description:
Oedema is a condition where fluid leaks from the vessels and accumulates in the surrounding tissue, resulting in swelling in those areas. Most often, the arms or legs are affected, since the fluid is most likely to accumulate there due to gravity. Mild oedema often occurs after prolonged sitting or standing. During pregnancy or just before menstruation, hormone-induced oedema may appear. Injuries may also lead to oedema, but they disappear on their own. Causes of water retention can also be numerous diseases and metabolic disorders. This is particular for generalised oedema, where fluid accumulates and swells throughout the body.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
In Chinese Medicine the metabolic process of aqueous fluid is centred on the Spleen, Lung and Kidney. After the liquid is generated, it is first transferred by the Spleen’s ascending function to the Lung. The Lung receives the water from the Spleen and spreads it all over the body. Kidney Yang maintains the metabolism of water and fluid and promotes the function of the Spleen and Lung in the metabolism of water and fluid. If any of the three organs, Spleen, Lung or Kidney malfunctions, it can cause obstacles in the distribution and excretion of water, causing water to stay in the body and produce oedema.
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Heart and Lung Qi Deficiency and Damp with Water Retention
Oedema of whole body or legs, fatigue, shortness of breath, pale complexion, palpitations.
Recommended formulas to use:
Kidney Yang Deficiency with Water Retention
Recommended formulas to use:

Oedema of whole body or legs, irregular period, premenstrual syndrome.
