归脾丸 / Gui Pi Wan
Treats the following symptoms:
Nourish Blood was first published in Yan Yonghe’s “Formulas for Benefiting Health” in the Song Dynasty and was completed in 1253 AD. Mainly treat anaemia, anxiety and palpitation, dizziness and vertigo, forgetfulness, depression, immune deficiency and insomnia which are caused by Heart and Spleen, Qi and Blood Deficiency Syndrome. It also treats blood in the stool, subcutaneous purpura, early menstruation, women with heavy menstruation, excessive uterine bleeding with lighter blood colour caused by Spleen Deficiency leading to inability to control Blood.
Although Nourish Blood is the formula of treating both Heart and Spleen, the focus is on the treatment of the Spleen, because the Spleen is the source of Qi and Blood metaplasia. So, it is called “Gui Pi”, meaning “return to the Spleen“. The formulation commonly used for neurasthenia, aplastic anaemia, thrombocytopenic purpura, etc., which are both Heart and Spleen Qi and Blood Deficiency and failure of Spleen control Blood.
Studies suggest that Nourish Blood has effects of improving bone marrow microcirculation, increasing bone marrow hematopoietic tissue, improving learning and memory ability, enhance immunity, regulate central nervous function and enhance hematopoietic function.
ANAEMIA
Disease description:
Anaemia is the deficiency of red blood pigment and / or red blood cells and thus a too low proportion of blood cells in the body to carry adequate oxygen to your body’s tissues. Having anaemia can make you feel tired and weak. Women are more susceptible because of their menstrual periods. An imbalanced diet or certain genetic chronic diseases can also lead to anaemia. Signs of anaemia are paleness, dizziness, headaches, tiredness and lack of concentration, along with shortness of breath and chest pains and increased susceptibility to infections.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Chinese Medicine believes that Blood production comes from the essence of Mizutani. People ingest Mizutani through nutrients and absorb the subtlety of food from the Spleen and Stomach and then turn into Blood. The formation and regulation of Blood is also closely related to the Heart, Liver, Spleen, Kidney and other organs. Therefore, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is determined that “Heart leads Blood, Liver stores Blood, and Spleen controls Blood,” meaning the Heart gives the Blood the power to flow, leading it, while the Liver stores the Blood and the Spleen controls the Blood to keep in in the vessels. The full function of these organs depends on the life of the Kidney Yang. A weakened Heart, Liver, Spleen or Kidney function can all lead to Blood Deficiency.
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Qi and Blood Deficiency
Blood is deficient either in quantity or quality, causing fatigue and loss of energy, palpitations, breathlessness on exertion and persistently heavy menstruation.

ANXIETY AND HEART PALPITATIONS
Typical symptoms:
anxiety and palpitations, dizziness and vertigo, nausea and vomiting, palpitations, sweatingDisease description:
Anxiety is a normal emotion. It’s your brain’s way of reacting to stress and potential threatening situation ahead.
It is part of life but if it gets out of control, it can become pathological and impair the quality of life. Most often fears occur in connection with heart disease, respiratory diseases or thyroid disorders. Depression or another mental illness, disorders of the nervous system and the brain can be the cause for it. Anxiety can trigger various symptoms such as heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, trembling, nausea, vomiting and sweating.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Chinese medicine refers to anxiety and palpitations as Heart Shen disturbance, because the Heart controls the Shen. Shen refers to the higher central nervous activities which include the spirit, consciousness and thinking. Imbalance of Yin and Yang and disturbance of Heart function may cause anxiety and palpitations.

CHRONIC HEADACHE AND MIGRAINE
Disease description:
A migraine attack can cause pulsating and throbbing headaches, lasting between a few hours and up to three days. They are usually on one side of the head and accompanying symptoms are nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, as well as sensitivity to light, noise and smell. Migraines can occur with or without the so-called “aura”. This precedes the headaches and is usually caused by visual disturbances. A combination of factors such as lifestyle, diet and family predisposition can lead to a migraine attack with intense headaches.
Chronic headaches due to excessive muscle tension can be caused by persistent incorrect strain or psychological factors. Tension headaches are more likely to cause pulling pain or pressure pain, severe restrictions in everyday life and high psychological stress, as well as high internal tension.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Chinese medicine says that “head is the meeting place of all Yang meridians”, “the brain is the sea of the marrow”, it means that all Internal Organs send Essence and Blood to the head. Because of this close relationship, factors that imbalance organs can be the cause of headaches. Although the symptoms are in the head, it is closely related to Liver, Spleen and Kidney. Headache can also be a cause of External Wind or Invading Cold. To be summarized there are two types of headache, the External caused and Internal caused.
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Wind-Cold Headache
For headaches with an unclear cause, Wind-Cold can be the reason with signs of headaches and stiffness on the occiput, stiff back and neck, body aches, aversion to cold, runny nose, headache worse when exposed to wind or when the season/ weather changes.

EARLY MENSTRUATION (CYCLE LESS THEN 21 DAYS)
Typical symptoms:
early menstruationDisease description:
Menstruation refers to the days when the menstrual blood flows from the vagina. A cycle is the time from the first day of menstruation to the last day before the next menstruation. This is different for every woman but normally takes happens about every 21 to 35 days. Usually, menstrual bleeding occurs 28 days after the last period. Normally menstruation starts with heavier bleeding, which becomes lighter over the next few days. The light red blood becomes darker and darker. The menstrual period lasts three to six days and at the end, there may well be spotting with old, brownish blood. As a rule, women lose a total of about 50-60 millilitres of blood during menstruation.
Cycle disturbances or irregularities in the female cycle can occur, which relate to the frequency, duration and strength/heaviness of menstruation. They are normal immediately after the first menstrual period, as menstruation and hormonal changes must first settle down.
There are many causes of cycle disturbances. Since the cycle is hormonally controlled, hormonal disorders, as well as diseases of the female sexual organs, are most often the cause of changes. Moreover, medication, genetic disposition, physical or psychological stress can also be the cause of cycle problems.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Qi and Blood is an important factor in maintaining the menstrual cycle. No matter what causes Qi and Blood Disorders, it will lead to early menstruation. If there is Heat in the Blood, it will disrupt the natural flow of the Blood making it overflow from the vessels. The Spleen works to restrict the Blood to run in the Blood vessels, therefore a weak Spleen won’t be able to control the Blood, leading to the Blood will overflowing. Congenital Kidney Qi Deficiency can also manifest as early menstruation because Kidney Qi is the basis for maintaining menstruation.
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Blood Heat
Early periods which are heavy with bright red or dark red blood, can also be associated with anxiety, irritability, mental restlessness, red face, thirst, dark urine, dry stools, a sensation of heat, sweating.

Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Heavy menstruation is caused by Qi Deficiency or Heat in Blood. Qi manages the Blood; it controls the Blood circulation to maintain the Blood’s move in the Blood vessel. Qi Deficiency causes uncontrolled Blood, Heat in Blood forces the Blood to act violently, both leading to excessive menstruation.
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Blood Heat
Heavy periods, bright or dark red, dense blood, mental restlessness, anxiety, a feeling of heat, thirst, dark urine, headaches.
Recommended formulas to use:
Qi Deficiency
Heavy periods, pale, watery blood, pale complexion, fatigue, palpitations, shortness of breath.

HIV / AIDS
Typical symptoms:
abdominal pain, anaemia, breathlessness on exertion, cold and flu in a prolonged duration, cough, fatigue, fever, HIV/AIDS, immune compromised patient, immune deficiency, loose stool, loss of energy, pain in the chest, shortness of breath, sore throat, stomach ache, sweating, swollen and painful gums, weight loss, yeast and fungal problemsDisease description:
HIV stands for “Human Immunodeficiency Virus”, the pathogen that weakens the human immune system. Infection with HIV most often occur during unprotected sexual intercourse or through HIV-infected blood. Failure to treat HIV infection means that at a certain point in time the body will no longer be able defend itself against other infectious pathogens and falls seriously ill with normally harmless diseases. This condition is then called “Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome” (AIDS). People with AIDS often suffer from pneumonia and fungal diseases.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
HIV infection is viewed as an Invasion of Damp and Toxic Heat, which is not showing symptoms in the beginning (asymptomatic phase). The virus is hiding in the body and slowly depleting Wei Qi, then later attacks the Lung and can cause flu-like symptoms. Then it progresses inwards depleting Spleen and Stomach Qi and drying Stomach Yin. The Toxic Heat dries the Blood, causing Blood Deficiency and eventually Yin- and Yang- and Essence Deficiency.
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Qi Deficiency and Latent Toxin
Immune deficiency in the asymptomatic HIV positive patient.
Recommended formulas to use:
Lung Qi & Yin Deficiency
Susceptibility to infection such as recurrent episodes of a sore throat, fever, dry cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, rashes, pruritus, weight loss, fatigue, night sweating.

Immune deficiency, wet skin lesions, yeast and fungal problems, parasitic diarrhoea, bleeding gums.
Recommended formulas to use:
INSOMNIA (SLEEPING DISORDER)
Typical symptoms:
insomniaDisease description:
Our body and mind need sufficient sleep to regenerate and gather new strength. Anyone who sleeps badly more than three nights a week for more than a month could have a chronic sleep disorder (insomnia). Besides stress, family and health problems, sleep disorders are often the result of depression. Due to age-related sleep changes, sleep disorders occur particularly frequently after the age of 60. Those affected are tired during the day, unable to concentrate, have attention and memory problems, are easily irritable and have general weakness. As a result, performance decreases considerably.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Chinese medicine believes that the day belongs to Yang, night belongs to Yin. Yin and Yang of the human body move with the change of the day and night, so there is a wake-up and sleep cycle. Therefore, any disorder of organ function can disturb Yin-Yang balance and cause insomnia.
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Liver Qi Stagnation and Blood Deficiency and Heat (stress-related)
Recommended formulas to use:
Heart Yin Deficiency and Heat (often seen in older people)
Yin Deficiency fails to nourish the Heart, resulting Heat disturbs the Shen, causing difficulty sleeping, restlessness, dream-disturbed sleep, palpitations, anxiety, hot feeling in palms during sleep.
Recommended formulas to use:
Heart Blood Deficiency (anaemia-related)
Deficiency of Heart Blood leads to lack of support of Shen, causing difficulty sleeping, dream-disturbed sleep, low energy, poor concentration, pale face and a poor appetite.
Recommended formulas to use:
UTERINE ENDOMETRIOSIS, LEIOMYOMAS OR FIBROIDS, FALLOPIAN TUBE BLOCKAGE
Typical symptoms:
frequent urination, infertility, lower back ache, period pain (dysmenorrhoea), uterine bleedingDisease description:
Endometriosis is a benign, sometimes painful growth of tissue of the endometrium. The presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity is one of the most common gynaecological diseases. Since female sex hormones have an important influence on the course of the disease, women are usually affected between puberty and menopause. After the menopause, the symptoms can subside or even disappear.
The most common benign growths that occur in the muscle layer of the uterus (myoma) can develop in any woman. It is suspected that the female hormone oestrogen also plays an important role in this process, as does genetic predisposition.
Endometriosis and fibroids are often asymptomatic. Sometimes symptoms that my present are abnormal uterine bleeding, bleeding between periods, prolonged spotting, as well as heavy or painful period pain, fullness in the lower abdomen and pelvic area, enlarged uterus or abdomen, frequent urination, painful bowel movements, pain during sex, lower back pain, infertility, multiple miscarriages or early labour.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Chinese medicine believes that the diseases are caused by Uterine Qi and Blood Running Stasis or because of Phlegm Dampness, which causes “Phlegm and Blood Stasis” in the long term, thereby forming a mass in the uterus.
Please note: We recommend our formula only for the treatment of growths with a diameter under 3 cm, bigger fibroids/ leiomyomas can not be successfully treated.
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Qi and Blood Stagnation
Qi Stagnation
Abdominal pain that moves or feels like bloating or pressure, irregular or delayed periods, PMS, painful periods, depression, irritability.
Blood Stasis
Abdominal pain that is fixed, sharp, worse at night, delayed periods, painful periods with dark blood and clots.
