清热除痹片 / Qing Re Chu Bi Pian
Treats the following symptoms:
Clear Heat Bi is an adjusted formula from an ancient recipe “Xuan Bi Tang” from“Differentiation and treatment of febrile disease”. Sang Zhi (Ramulus Mori) and Wei Ling Xian (Herba Potentillae Chinensis) are used in Clear Heat Bi to replace Fangji (Fourstamen Stephania Root ) in “Xuan Bi Tang”, which contains aristolochic acid. The effects of Clear Heat Bi are to clear away Damp-Heat, dredge the Meridians and relieve arthritis pain; attending to Damp-Heat Bi Syndrome. Damp-Heat Bi Syndrome is that Damp-Heat accumulating in the joints and meridians, Meridian Qi and Blood are blocked and thus become Bi (blockage). It is clinically used for Heat Bi Syndromes characterized by red, swollen, painful and stiffness in the affected joint muscles, or the mouth is dry and thirsty, the urine is thick and yellowish, or the stool is dry, the tongue is red or crimson or the tongue coating is yellow greasy and thick, the pulse slippery. Therefore, it is also very good for the treatment of gout.
Modern studies have shown that the main ingredients in this recipe have anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects, analgesic effects, can reduce the blood uric acid, improves microcirculation, break down joint adhesions and promote tissue fluid reflux and absorption.
ARTHRITIS
Disease description:
Arthritis is an inflammatory joint disease that can lead to damage to the joint surfaces. Besides bacteria, other infections in the body, a hereditary predisposition, as well as autoimmune processes can play a central role in the development of the disease. The inflammatory processes cause not only pain but also swelling of the joint, overheating and reddening of the skin in the area and joint effusion. In the beginning, symptoms show maybe morning stiffness, fatigue, exhaustion, fever, loss of appetite. In acute arthritis, the joint inflammation occurs very suddenly, while chronic arthritis is a protracted joint disease. Over time, there may be progressive destruction of the joint, which limits mobility and can lead to and joint deformation.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Wind, Cold and Damp Invasion with Deficiency (often seen in older people)
When Wind, Cold and Damp invade individuals with Liver, Kidney, Qi and Blood Deficiency, there might be chronic pain, stiffness and a feeling of cold in the lower back, knees, joints, difficult movement, soreness, numbness.
Better for warmth, worse with damp cold.
Recommended formulas to use:
Damp-Heat (often seen in younger people)
Wind, Cold and Damp pathogens can turn into Heat in the Interior and give rise to Heat Bi, especially when there is underlying Yin Deficiency. The patient experience acute severe pain, limited movement, heat in the joints (which feel hot to the touch), red, swollen joints.
Worse with red meat or drinking alcohol.
Recommended formulas to use:
Kidney Qi Deficiency (often seen in older patients)
A Deficiency of Kidney Qi and Essence fails to nourish the lumbar area, causing chronic pain and stiffness, sore, weak lower back and knees. Bursitis around joints (Knee, shoulder, ligaments).
Better for pressure.
Formula to use: Zhuang Yao Pian
A weak body cant fight cold attacks, leading to severe pain:
Combine with Formula: Relieve Bi
Recommended formulas to use:
GOUT
Typical symptoms:
Disease description:
Gout is a metabolic disease in which increased uric acid levels occur, the uric acid crystals can deposit in the joint and lead to inflammation there. Genetic or acquired predisposition to elevated uric acid levels in combination with an unfavourable lifestyle can cause gout attacks with durations lasting for days or sometimes weeks. Typically, the inflammation occurs suddenly and leads to painful, sometimes swollen, reddened joints, usually only the base joint of the big toe is affected.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Gout belongs to Bi Syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine, which is either a Damp and Heat blocking the Meridians or Cold and Damp blocking Meridians. The problem starts by a combination of Spleen Deficiency and unhealthy diet which may cause dysfunction of the Spleen and produce Turbid Dampness, which will further damage the internal organs.
If the Turbid Dampness turns into Damp-Heat and blocks the Meridians and joints, it is resulting in gout nodules. Known as “Damp Heat Gout”.
If Turbid Dampness and Cold Evil are interlinked, they block the Qi and Blood Circulation in the Meridian, causing joint swelling, deformity and stiffness. Known as “Damp Cold Gout”.
Possible syndromes causing these problems:
Damp-Heat
An accumulation of Damp Heat blocks the Flow of Qi and Blood, causing severe, acute fixed joint pain, heat, thirst, possibly constipation, possibly swelling, restricted movement, high levels of uric acid.
Better for cold, worse with red meat or alcohol, coffee, sugar.
