PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
SSKI (Saturated Solution of Potassium Iodide) is an antimicrobial agent with widespread clinical applications that go beyond the treatment of infections. Its action is due to the iodide ion. It is assumed that its efficacy in the treatment of various types of cysts is is due to modification of the way in which production of the carcinogenic estrone and hydroxyestrone derivatives is modified towards estriol which is not carcinogenic. Oral use of SSKI in the case of chronic bronchitis and emphysema thins the thick secretions which are difficult to expel. At the same time its antimicrobial activity prevents infections from spreading.
INDICATIONS
Oral applications: bladder infections, ovarian and other cysts, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, fibrocystic breast disease, prevention of infections during prolonged periods in confined spaces with other people (air travel etc.).
Topical applications: keloids, haemorrhoids, Peyronie’s disease of the penis, du Puytrens contraction, fungal toe nail infections. Topical use will also remove fatty deposits such as sebaceous cysts.
CONTRA INDICATIONS
Thyroid problems, unless under medical supervision.
WARNINGS
Medical advice should be sought in all prolonged applications of SSKI and thyroid tests should then be performed on a regular basis. Do not attempt to self-medicate if you suffer from thyroid problems. Although the use of the product may be beneficial in some instances, it may exacerbate the problem in others.
INTERACTIONS
None reported at normal dosage.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Avoid using.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS OF USE
In most conditions, six to ten drops of SSKI in half a glass of water is used. For prolonged use (longer than three weeks), as required for ovarian and other cysts, eight drops per day should not be exceeded and thyroid function should be monitored on a regular basis. For topical applications, rub the undiluted solution into the affected parts at least twice daily. Improvement of topical conditions is often only seen after several months of usage.
SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Thyroid abnormalities may be seen in a small percentage of patients (less than 1%) during prolonged use (longer than three weeks). These effects normalise when the use of SSKI is discontinued.
KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT
Thyroid abnormality. Discontinue treatment.
