Melanocytes, which are located at the base of the epidermis, lose their normal regulation process with aging, a shift in hormone levels, exessive UV and HEV exposure or with inflammation, which may result in the production of excess pigments. This excess production leads to the formation of dense perinuclear clumps of melanin in keratinocytes within the epidermis, resulting in areas of hyperpigmentation.
