Expel Wind is the main formulation for the treatment of headaches caused by exogenous Wind Evils. It is from the first Chinese patent prescription “Tai Ping Formulas of welfare dispensary” disseminated by China in the Song Dynasty. It has been in clinical use for more than 900 years. Since the formulation contains pungent and warm herbs which have the effect of spreading and sweating, it is most suitable for those with Wind-Cold Evil and headache. Chinese medicine believes that humans correspond to nature and uses this to understand the causes of disease. Wind is a common cause of illness. Wind Evils are classified into exogenous (originating from outside the body) and endogenous (originating from within the body) Wind Evils.
Ancient Chinese physicians said that “the characteristics of Wind are moving and changeable“, which means that exogenous Wind Evils can cause a variety of diseases, most likely to cause headaches. The reason is that exogenous Wind Evils can easily move up, disturb and block the Qi in the head which results in headaches. Chronic headaches caused by Wind Evils are common in migraines, common colds, chronic rhinitis, acute sinusitis, etc. The effect of Expel Wind is to dispersal Wind and relieve pain.

CHRONIC HEADACHE AND MIGRAINE
Disease description:
A migraine attack can cause pulsating and throbbing headaches, lasting between a few hours and up to three days. They are usually on one side of the head and accompanying symptoms are nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, as well as sensitivity to light, noise and smell. Migraines can occur with or without the so-called “aura”. This precedes the headaches and is usually caused by visual disturbances. A combination of factors such as lifestyle, diet and family predisposition can lead to a migraine attack with intense headaches.
Chronic headaches due to excessive muscle tension can be caused by persistent incorrect strain or psychological factors. Tension headaches are more likely to cause pulling pain or pressure pain, severe restrictions in everyday life and high psychological stress, as well as high internal tension.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Chinese medicine says that “head is the meeting place of all Yang meridians”, “the brain is the sea of the marrow”, it means that all Internal Organs send Essence and Blood to the head. Because of this close relationship, factors that imbalance organs can be the cause of headaches. Although the symptoms are in the head, it is closely related to Liver, Spleen and Kidney. Headache can also be a cause of External Wind or Invading Cold. To be summarized there are two types of headache, the External caused and Internal caused.

Sinusitis is the swelling of the mucous membrane in the paranasal sinuses. Respiratory viruses causing the common cold or flu, can lead to acute sinusitis. If the condition lasts longer than three months, it is considered as chronic sinusitis. When one has a cold, the nose is no longer sufficiently ventilated and the secretion that does not run off anymore can cause the swelling of the mucous membrane of the nose and the paranasal sinuses. Typical symptoms are a blocked nose and cough, fever, swelling and pus collection. Pain often occurs in the forehead, jaw or around the eyes and typically the head hurts badly when bending over too quickly.
Explanation according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Acute sinusitis can be a result of acute rhinitis, colds or influenza. Traditional Chinese medicine considers sinusitis as an external Wind-Cold invading and causing blocking of sinuses, which leads to Wind-Cold pattern sinusitis. External Wind-Heat invasion or Wind-Cold change into Heat, causing the blockage of sinuses, leading to Wind-Heat pattern sinusitis. If the Qi is weak and can’t overcome Evil, it is converted to chronic sinusitis.
